Quizzes¶
Quizzes are graded assessments inside a course. This page covers starting a quiz, timers and attempts, reading your results, and what to do when you run out of attempts.
Starting a quiz¶
When a lesson contains a quiz, it appears as an Assessment block. Click Start assessment to open the quiz.
The intro screen tells you what to expect before you begin:

| Pass ≥ X% | The score you need to pass. |
| Time limit | How long you have, or Untimed. |
| Attempts | How many tries you get, or Unlimited, and how many you've used. |
| Best score | Your highest score so far, if you've attempted it before. |
From here the button reads Start assessment, Resume attempt (if you have one in progress), or Retake (if you've attempted it before and have attempts left).
Taking the quiz¶
Depending on how the quiz is set up, you'll either see one question at a time (with Next → to advance) or all questions on one page. Your answers save as you go.
Question types you may see:
- Single choice: pick one option.
- Multiple select: pick every option that applies.
- Short answer: type your response. These are graded by an instructor afterward.
Timers¶
If the quiz is timed, a countdown shows in the top corner while you work. It turns red in the final seconds. When time runs out, the quiz submits automatically with whatever you've answered so far.
While you're being assessed¶
Some quizzes apply extra integrity measures:
- Focus tracking: if the quiz records it, leaving the quiz tab is counted and shown as a focus loss indicator.
- Copy/paste blocking: some quizzes disable copying and pasting.
Secure assessments
A few high-stakes quizzes require the PulseLMS secure desktop client. If you see Secure client required, that quiz can't be taken in a normal browser; contact your administrator.
When you've answered everything, click Submit assessment.
Your results¶
After submitting, you'll see your outcome right away:
- Passed / Not passed, with your score percentage and the passing threshold.
- A per-question breakdown marking each question Correct or Incorrect.
Awaiting grading
If the quiz included short-answer questions, it shows Awaiting grading; an instructor grades those questions before your final score is set. Those questions appear as Pending until then.
Click Back to course to return to the lesson. Passing a required quiz lets the lesson complete.
Retakes and reset requests¶
If you don't pass and still have attempts, just start the quiz again; the intro screen offers Retake.
When you've used all your attempts on a required quiz or check, your next step depends on your organization's policy:
- Self-service retake: a Retake course option lets you reset your attempts and start over yourself.
- Instructor reset: click Request a reset to ask your instructor to restore your attempts. The player confirms your request is pending; you'll be notified when it's approved.
