Quizzes & question banks¶
Build graded assessments backed by question banks, tune scoring and security, grade short answers by hand, and embed a published quiz in any lesson.
A quiz is a standalone, scored assessment. Every quiz owns a question bank: the pool of questions it draws from. You configure how the quiz behaves, add questions to its bank, and publish it so it can be embedded in lessons.
Create a quiz¶
- Open Quizzes in the Authoring Studio.
- Click Create quiz and give it a title (for example, Module 1 Assessment).
- Click Create quiz. PulseLMS creates the quiz and its question bank together and opens the quiz editor.

The Quizzes page has a search box and a sort control (Newest, Title A–Z, or Status). Each card shows the pass score, time limit, and whether the quiz is secure.
Add questions¶
In the quiz editor, click Add question under the Questions list.

Edit or delete any question from the list with the row icons.
Quiz settings¶
The settings card at the top of the quiz editor controls scoring and behavior. Numeric fields commit when you click away.

Combine a large question bank with Draw N questions and Shuffle so every learner gets a different, unpredictable set, useful for high-stakes or repeatable assessments.
Security options¶
These raise the cost of cheating in a browser. They are deterrents and soft signals, not hard guarantees.

Focus-loss logging is a signal, not a verdict
Tab/focus-loss counts are recorded against the attempt for instructors to review. Treat them as a flag worth a second look, not proof of misconduct.
Publish a quiz¶
Click Publish in the quiz editor. A quiz needs at least one question before it can be published. Publishing makes it selectable as a lesson Quiz block. Use Unpublish to pull it back to draft.
Grade short answers¶
Objective questions (multiple choice, multiple select, true/false) are graded automatically. Short-answer questions wait for a human.
When an attempt includes short-answer responses, its score is held until a grader reviews them.
Grading happens on the Grading page in the sidebar:
- Open Grading. It lists every attempt waiting on a human: who sat it, which quiz, when they submitted, and how many answers are outstanding. Oldest first, so whoever has been waiting longest is at the top.
- Click Grade on a row. Each written answer shows the question, the learner's text, and your model answer beside it.
- Award points; the buttons run from 0 to the question's maximum.
The score and pass/fail recalculate as you go. Once the last short answer in an attempt is graded, the attempt leaves the queue, its result is final, and the learner is notified that their quiz has been graded.
Who grades
Manual grading is an instructor and org-admin task, part of managing delivery rather than authoring content. Authors who are not also instructors don't see the Grading page.
A written question needs someone to grade it
An attempt with a short answer stays unfinished (and the learner keeps seeing it as unfinished) until a grader clears it. If nobody in your organization holds the instructor role, don't use short-answer questions.
Use a quiz in a lesson¶
A published quiz can be embedded in a lesson as a Quiz block:
- In the course editor, on a lesson, click + Quiz.
- Choose a published quiz from the picker. (Only published quizzes appear; publish the quiz first.)
- Save.
The learner must pass the quiz to complete that lesson. All the quiz's own settings (pass score, attempts, time limit, shuffle, security) apply wherever it is embedded.
