Assignments

Push published courses and programs to your members, set due dates, mark work mandatory, track overdue learners, and approve quiz resets.

Learners can enroll themselves in any course that allows self-enrollment, but assigning is how you require someone to complete something by a date.

Who can assign

Org admins can assign to anyone in the organization. Managers can assign to members of the teams they manage, and to nobody else.

Authoring a course and assigning it are separate jobs. An author who is not also a manager or org admin builds and publishes the course, but does not assign it, and will not see an Assign button. Instructors do not assign either; they teach, grade, and approve resets. See Roles & permissions.

Assigning a course

You assign from the course itself, so the course must be published first.

  1. Open the course:
  2. From the Catalog: click Assign on the course card. This is the route managers use.
  3. Or, if you also author, from the course in the authoring editor.
  4. Click Assign (available on published courses).
  5. In the Assign course dialog, optionally:
  6. Tick Mandatory to mark the assignment as required.
  7. Set a due date.
  8. Choose who gets it:
  9. Assign to all: everyone you can assign to. For an org admin that is every member of the organization; for a manager it is their team, not the whole organization.
  10. Assign selected: pick individual members from the list. The list shows only the people you are allowed to assign to, so a manager sees their team.

Each assigned learner is enrolled and notified right away (in-app, plus email if they have it on). Re-assigning someone who is already enrolled updates their due date and mandatory flag rather than creating a duplicate.

Only published courses can be assigned

If the Assign button is missing on a course you can otherwise see, either the course is still a draft (publish it first) or your role does not include assigning.

Assigning a program

Programs (learning paths, ordered sequences of courses) are assigned the same way from the program, with the same assign to all or assign selected choice, and the same limits on who you can assign to. Program assignment enrolls the member and starts them at the first course in the path.

Mandatory work

Marking an assignment mandatory signals that it is required, and this is what drives compliance behaviors such as automatic recertification. Mandatory enrollments are flagged as such in reports and in each member's transcript.

Due dates and overdue tracking

When you set a due date, PulseLMS watches it:

  • A daily reminder sweep notifies learners whose work is due within 72 hours ("due soon") or already past due ("overdue").
  • Overdue counts surface throughout the app: on the People roster, in each member's transcript, and across the Reports tabs (Overview, Courses, Teams, Learners).

Reminders are de-duplicated, so a learner is not spammed by the daily sweep. See Integrations → Email and notifications.

Reset requests

Quizzes can limit how many attempts a learner gets. When a learner runs out of attempts, they can request a reset, which lands on the Reset Requests page for instructors and admins.

To handle a request:

  1. Open Reset Requests (in the Instructor section of the sidebar).
  2. Each pending request shows the course and who asked. Click Approve reset.

Approving resets that learner's enrollment so they can retake the assessment. If there are no pending requests, the page is empty; learners only appear here after they exhaust their attempts.
